Autonomy (Christiane Brosius)

Sub-project 1 consists of interrelated projects carried out by the PI (research topic: young single women in Delhi), a postdoctoral researcher, Laila Abu-Er-Rub (research topic: single women in the creative industries), and two PhD students, Chenying Pi (research topic: Scripting Gender in Chinese Television Drama in the 2000s) together with Lucie Bernroider (Urban Imaginaries and Feminist Protest in Delhi). Despite this large variety of different research topics, all members will study notions of private and public, and the ways in which these categories are negotiated and contested, restricted and opened up by single women in Delhi.

Accordingly, the autonomy-project research objectives are:

  • To document tensions between autonomy and risk in shifting public and private spaces in Delhi.
  • To analyse the creative industries generation of new workplaces, impacting on notions of autonomy.
  • To engage in comparative analysis of media landscapes and gendered representation that impact on imagined use and experience of the City.
